BERKELEY — Local author Hiroshi Kashiwagi will read from his books on Saturday, March 6, at 1:30 p.m. at the BCA (Buddhist Churches of America) Bookstore, located at 2140 Durant Ave. in Berkeley.

A native of Sacramento and a Bay Area resident since 1952, Kashiwagi is a retired librarian of the San Francisco Public Library. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild and the Screen Actors Guild. He and his wife, Sadako, are parents of three sons.

SAN JOSE — Farmer and writer David Mas Masumoto will speak on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, Room 229, 150 E. San Fernando St. in San Jose.

Hailed by the New York Times as “a poet of farming” and the Los Angeles Times as the “rock star farmer” who “uses his farm as Thoreau did his Walden Pond,” Masumoto is the award-winning author of “Epitaph for a Peach,” “Harvest Son,” “Wisdom of the Last Farmer” and other books, and spokesperson for organic farming.

SAN MATEO — Author Hiroshi Kashiwagi will read poems from his latest book, “Ocean Beach,” on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. as part of Asian American Curriculum Project’s sixth annual poetry event.

The audience is invited to participate in the open-mic program.

MENLO PARK — Wendy Nelson Tokunaga will read from her new book, “Love in Translation,” on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Kepler’s Bookstore, 1010 El Camino Real in Menlo Park.

In the novel, 33-year-old aspiring singer Celeste Duncan feels stuck with her deadbeat boyfriend and static career. But then she receives a puzzling phone call and a box full of mysterious family heirlooms that just might be the first real clue to the identity of the father she never knew.

PALO ALTO — Palo Alto City Library presents a free author event with local memoirist Jean Oda Moy on Friday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Palo Alto Art Center Auditorium, 1313 Newell Rd.

"Snow on Willow: A Nisei Memoir," Moy’s autobiography, reflects on her life as the American-born daughter of Japanese immigrants, first as a child in pre-World War II Seattle and then as a teenager in wartime Japan. This book provides a rarely heard perspective on the experience of American-born Japanese in wartime and postwar Japan.

Kazuko Nakane will read from and sign copies of her book “Nothing Left in My Hands: The Issei of a Rural California Town, 1900-1942” (reprinted by Heyday Books).

Jake Adelstein will discuss his new book, “Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan” (Knopf Doubleday), on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 5:45 p.m. at USF Center for the Pacific Rim, located in Fromm Hall on the University of San Francisco campus, Parker Street between Golden Gate and Folsom in San Francisco.

At 19, Adelstein went to Japan in search of peace and tranquility. What he got was a life of crime — crime reporting, that is, at the prestigious Yomiuri Shinbun.
