The Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) and the Japantown Merchants Association will present a free outdoor screening of “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” on Friday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. in Peace Plaza, Post and Buchanan streets in Japantown.

The 2006 animated film, whose original title is “Toki o Kakeru Shoujo,” is in Japanese with English subtitles. It tells the story of 17-year-old Makoto, who gains the ability to leap backwards through time.

“Transcending: The Wat Misaka Story” is a documentary film about the first Asian American pro basketball player.

A Nisei born, raised and still living in Utah, Wataru “Wat” Misaka was the first-round draft pick of the New York Knicks in 1947. Just two years after Japanese Americans were released from the World War II internment camps, he overcame the national political climate of the time.

SACRAMENTO — Actor Mickey Rooney said he was shocked that a public screening of his 1961 movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” was canceled because of his portrayal of the Japanese landlord Mr. Yunioshi, which many Asian Americans find offensive.

Sacramento Vice Mayor Steve Cohn had planned to show the film, which stars Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, as part of the city’s free Screen on the Green series on the evening of Aug. 23 at Glen Hall Park. Instead, the Disney/Pixar film “Ratatouille” was brought in as a last-minute replacement.

SAN MATEO — Every first Sunday of the month, San Mateo Kabuki Group watches kabuki videos at the Japanese American Community Center, 415 S. Claremont St.

The group will watch “Shinsenryo Koban no Umenoha,” written by Kawatake Mokuami, on Sept. 7 at 1:30 p.m.

Ex-convict Tomizo approaches a samurai, Tojuro, to help him steal a large amount of money from the safe at Edo Castle. They successfully take 4,000 ryo and hide the money underneath Tojuro’s house.

Bay Area filmmaker Steven Okazaki has been nominated for a prime-time Emmy Award for his latest documentary about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, “White Light/Black Rain.”

Produced for HBO, the film was nominated in the category of “exceptional merit in non-fiction programming” along with “Oswald’s Ghost” and “Walt Whitman,” both produced for the PBS series “The American Experience.”

The awards ceremony will be held on Sept. 21 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, and will be broadcast on ABC.

Superfest, an international disability film festival, is held every year in Berkeley. For those who missed it, seven of the festival's 14 award winners will be shown on Saturday, July 26, from 1 to 5:30 p.m. in the Koret Auditorium of the San Francisco Main Library, 100 Larkin St. (at Grove).

Presented by Culture! Disability! Talent! in association with the Access Services of the San Francisco Public Library, the event marks the 18th anniversary of the signing of the Americans With Disabilities Act.

The Consulate General of Japan will be presenting its second installment in a series of films on Japanese culture on Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 7:45 p.m. at the Koret Auditorium at the San Francisco Public Library, 100 Larkin St.

Two stories from the film “Kwaidan” will be shown, namely “Hoichi the Earless” and “In a Cup of Tea.”

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Dr. Satsuki Ina has received the 2008 Alumni Award for Creativity from Oregon State University’s College of Education.

She produced two documentary films about the Japanese American internment experience, “Children of the Camps” (2000) and “From A Silk Cocoon” (2006).

Dr. Richard Shintaku, formerly on the faculty at OSU and currently dean of student services at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, nominated Ina with the following statement:

The 13th Annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival will start Friday, July 11, and run until Sunday, July 13, at the Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St. (at Market) in San Francisco.

The festival will feature 10 silent films from the 1920s from around the world, including the 1928 Japanese film “Jujiro” (Crossways), directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa.
