Mystery Writer Hirahara at S.F.'s Make-Out Room

Mystery writer Naomi Hirahara will speak on Saturday, June 14, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Make-Out Room, 3225 22nd St. (between Valencia and Mission) in San Francisco. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Hirahara and arts writer Sheerly Avni of Salon.com will appear as part of Writers With Drinks, a monthly “spoken-word variety show” hosted by Charlie Anders, author of “Choir Boy.” The event features a variety of guests, including authors, poets, comedians, cartoonists and radio hosts.

Based in Southern California, Hirahara has written three novels, “Summer of the Big Bachi,” “Gasa-Gasa Girl,” and “Snakeskin Shamisen.” The protagonist is Mas Arai, a Nisei gardener who solves murders on the side.

For Writers With Drinks, she is expected to read a noir story set in Los Angeles’ Koreatown.
Attendees must be at least 21 years old. Admission is $3 to $5, sliding scale. All proceeds benefit the fight to save rent control and the Center for Sex and Culture.
