The Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) and the Japantown Merchants Association will present a free outdoor screening of “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” on Friday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. in Peace Plaza, Post and Buchanan streets in Japantown.

The 2006 animated film, whose original title is “Toki o Kakeru Shoujo,” is in Japanese with English subtitles. It tells the story of 17-year-old Makoto, who gains the ability to leap backwards through time.

She sets about preventing personal mishaps, but soon realizes that changing the past isn’t so simple. Can she use her new powers to shape the future of herself and her friends?

From the production company Madhouse, Mamoru Hosoda’s “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” was created by a talented crew that worked on such classics as “Princess Mononoke” and “The Grave of the Fireflies.”

Running time is 98 minutes. Early arrival is recommended. Seating is first-come, first-served.
The film will be preceded by a screening of the Toyota’s “Free Your Story” Contest winner.

CAAM members at the student/senior level and above who e-mail membership@asianamericanmedia.org will get reserved seats and Scharffen Berger hot chocolates.

Promotional partners for this “Cinema Under the Stars” event are 4Fifteen Clothing, Angry Asian Man, HapiHour.org, Hyphen and the Japan Society of Northern California.
