September Chanoyu Events
Posted inSan Francisco chanoyu instructors Soko Takechi and Sokyo Tiscornia have announced the following tea-related events for September.
A wagashi Japanese sweet- making class will be held on Friday, Sept. 5, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
This class will feature sanshoku ohagi and yamamichi. Sanshoku (three-color) ohagi is made with sweet rice and has various outer coatings. Included will be aonori (green powdered seaweed), kinako (roasted soy bean flour) and an (sweet bean paste).
Yamamichi is a multi-colored outer layer of konashi (a kneaded smooth bean paste) wrapped around adzuki an bean center. It is then formed into the shape of an autumnal mountain path.
This class will include both demonstration and hands-on practice, with the freshly-made sweets served at the end of class.
The class fee is $30.
Chabana, the art of flower arranging for chanoyu, and poetry will be the focus of a hands-on workshop on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
Chabana has deep roots in the more stylized ikebana arrangements. Participants will enjoy guided practice in making seasonal arrangements and will create a seasonal poem reflecting their final arrangement.
The workshop fee is $30.
Both events are open to anyone wishing to enjoy Japanese culture through the tea ceremony.
