S.F. Symphony in Stern Grove
Posted inStern Grove welcomes an annual favorite, the renowned San Francisco Symphony (SFS) with Associate Conductor James Gaffigan. The concert begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, with an opening performance by Inouye Jazz, led by SFS Principal Trumpet Mark Inouye.
The third of 10 summer concerts, this admission-free performance will take place in Sigmund Stern Grove, located at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard in San Francisco.
The symphony’s program, beginning at 3 p.m., features excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake,” Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Opus 23 with pianist Inon Barnatan, Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” and music by Leonard Bernstein from the movie “On the Waterfront.”
The SFS has won such recording honors as France’s Grand Prix du Disque and Britain’s Gramophone Award. The MTT/SFS Mahler recording cycle, inaugurated in 2001 and released on the symphony’s label, has won four Grammys. SFS radio broadcasts, the first in North America to feature symphonic music when they began in 1926, carry the orchestra’s concerts across the country.
Inouye Jazz is an ensemble headed by Inouye, who throughout his career has divided his time between the jazz and classical worlds. Joining him are Jeff Massanari, one of the Bay Area’s most in-demand guitarists, Scott Pingel, SFS principal bassist since 2004, and Raymond Froehlich, who joined the symphony’s percussion section in 1991.
Inouye has held principal positions with the Houston and Charleston symphonies. He has performed under the baton of Kurt Masur with the New York Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta with the Israel Philharmonic. As a soloist, he performed the Tartini Violin Concerto, arranged for trumpet, with the Houston Symphony and the Haydn and Tomasi Concerti with the New World Symphony.
He has also appeared with the Tanglewood Wind Ensemble under Seiji Ozawa in Volumes 3 and 4 of the video production “Marsalis on Music,” performing the Carnival of Venice Variations and the Hummel Trumpet Concerto.
Earlier in the day, from noon to 1 p.m., KidStage in Stern Grove’s West Meadow will feature a classical instrument “petting zoo” with SFS. Also, a pre-concert Troc Talk with SFS takes place at noon in Trocadero’s Clubhouse.
Concert-goers are encouraged to arrive early for the best lawn seating and may bring picnics, low beach chairs and ground covers. Tall chairs, beach umbrellas and pets are prohibited in Stern Grove during concerts.
Stern Grove is accessible by Muni bus and metro lines. As there is no parking provided, public transportation is recommended. There will be a free valet bike service, and shuttle service within the grove is provided for seniors and disabled patrons. The audience is advised to come prepared for both sun and fog.
