Grammy Winner Youngblood to Play August Peace Event
Posted inSACRAMENTO — Grammy Award-winning musician Mary Youngblood will be playing at the 22nd annual August Peace Event Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Sacramento State Alumni Center, located on the south end of the Sacramento State University campus.
The event, which will be held on the 63rd anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, will feature Youngblood’s Native American flute music as well as presentations by Dr. Bill Durston, Rev. Bob Oshita, and Pamela Vergun.
Durston, a member of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), will speak about current U.S. policy on nuclear weapons in contrast to the ideal of nuclear disarmament. The slogan of the event is “No more Hiroshimas and Nagasakis!”
Vergun translated the memoirs of Sadako Okuda, a hibakusha (survivor of nuclear attack) from Hiroshima, in a book titled “A Dimly Burning Wick.”
Oshita is the head minister at Buddhist Church of Sacramento.
Also speaking will be Jennifer Kocsis, a recent graduate of Davis High School who won a PSR scholarship for her essay based on the famous quote, “War is a racket,” by two-time Medal of Honor recipient Major General Smedley Butler.
Doors will open at 4 p.m. for groups that will be exhibiting tables at the event, which is scheduled to run from 4:30 until 6 p.m.
The August Peace Event is free and open to the public but tax-deductible donations will be accepted. Refreshments will be served and parking is free. For more information, contact Janice Nakashima at (916) 393-7690.
