Kabuki Kai's September Meeting
Posted inSAN MATEO — Every first Sunday of the month, San Mateo Kabuki Group watches kabuki videos at the Japanese American Community Center, 415 S. Claremont St.
The group will watch “Shinsenryo Koban no Umenoha,” written by Kawatake Mokuami, on Sept. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
Ex-convict Tomizo approaches a samurai, Tojuro, to help him steal a large amount of money from the safe at Edo Castle. They successfully take 4,000 ryo and hide the money underneath Tojuro’s house.
After a whlie, Tomizo takes out the money little by little to spend it. But finally the two are caught and sent to Denmacho Prison in Edo.
The scenes inside the prison are very realistic because Mokuami got information from someone who had been there.
The cast includes Onoe Shoroku II as Tomizo and Ichimura Uzaemon XVII as Tojuro.
The annual membership fee is $25. For more information, Japanese speakers can contact Mika Bourbonnais at (650) 341-6849 and English speakers can contact Yoko Anderson at (650) 341-5872.
