The spring 2009 conferment of honors from the Japanese government continued on June 16 when Shotaro Hayashigatani was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.

At his official residence, the Japanese consul general in San Francisco, Yasumasa Nagamine, presented Hayashigatani with the award. About 30 of Hayashigatani’s friends and family gathered for the occasion and were all smiles as his accomplishments were feted.

Aiding Education

Singer/songwriters Goh Nakamura and Jane Lui will perform on Tuesday, June 30, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Cafe Du Nord, 2174 Market St., San Francisco.

Nakamura is a Bay Area-based musician who writes ditties about parking tickets, impossible crushes and faraway dreamlands. With one foot in the traditional troubadour world and another in the digital age, he performs at venues small, large, and virtual, to an enthusiastic and ever-growing audience.

GILROY — Students from Gilroy High School, accompanied by their teacher Darren Yafai, joined up with the Stories of Service (SOS) in Washington, D.C. on Memorial Day weekend.

The students placed a floral arrangement at the Wall of Heroes and heard a talk by Dr. Ray Murakami, an alumnus of Gilroy High School and past president of the Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism Foundation.

San Francisco’s Academy of Art University (AAU), a community of student and professional artists, designers and broadcasters, stands in unity with Euna Lee, 2001 BFA motion pictures and television alumna, and Laura Ling, adding its voices to the international demands for their immediate release.
